There are several interesting and convenient shopping areas in and around Mount Washington. Your neighbors will undoubtedly have their own recommendations regarding their favorite places to buy pastries or the Sunday New York Times. Below are some places to explore.
The eastern gateway to the neighborhood, just across the Kelly Avenue Bridge, is Mt. Washington Village, offering a variety of small shops. The village is an inviting place with a wide range of shops that include a florist, several hair salons, gift shops and a veterinarian. The village also boasts a variety of restaurants and cafes, ranging from small, “light fare” establishments to a steak house. The Light Rail line has a stop at one end of the village. The Mt. Washington Merchants Association represents many of the businesses in Mt. Washington Village, and has worked with the Mt. Washington community on many issues of common interest.
If you proceed just north of the Kelly Avenue Bridge, turn left at the light and go straight (rather than left towards the post office), you will come to Mount Washington Mill. Currently, this development houses Smith and Hawkins (a gardening store), Fresh Fields Supermarket, Starbucks, the Mt. Washington Wine Company, Amazing Glaze (a do-it-yourself pottery store), and Framin' Place.
Further north along Falls Road and on the left is the Falls Village shopping area. Located in this complex are a cafe (which stocks many foods to go), a book store, a shoe store, an interior design store, Blockbuster video, and banking services. At the rear of the complex are a Chinese restaurant and a pizzeria (take out only). Just south of the Falls Village shopping area is a liquor store.
Across the Kelly Avenue bridge and south on Falls Road (between Northern parkway and Cold Spring lane) is Cross Keys, an upscale shopping, office, and residential community. The entrance to Cross Keys is south on Falls Road about one quarter mile past Northern Parkway.
Traveling west on Smith Avenue is the Greenspring Shopping Center that also offers a variety of stores and shops, including a Shoppers Food Warehouse supermarket, hair salon, video rental store and pharmacy. Restaurant choices include Middle Eastern, Italian, Chinese, and a deli.
